APPRAISAL

“In 2012 I decided to carry out the total renovation of a typical Grade 2 Listed Norfolk Farmhouse. After a rigorous tender process I appointed Spice Building to do the work.

I managed the process myself, something I could never have managed without the unerring support from Wyndham Spice whose advice and expertise made him as much a project manager as being the contractor.

The project was unusual in that the plans lacked much of the detail that might normally have been expected. It therefore fell on Wyndham to guide me though such things as appointing a new structural surveyor, designing all the internal woodwork,  (including the staircase which in the official plans ran into a beam!), the lighting and all internal fixtures and fittings as well as the little touches that helped to enhance the period character of the house. Nothing was too much trouble and a great deal of leg work was involved all of which seemed to be taken as part of the job. It was very much a project that developed as we went along and Wyndham dealt with the planners and conservation officer with tact and common sense.

A high standard of workmanship was always expected and given from a polite and friendly set of workmen. Management of the project was very efficient ensuring necessary materials were available when needed, thus avoiding unnecessary hold ups. I particularly liked the added professional touch of every evening having the whole house thoroughly swept down and mess free.. 

The tradesmen, providers and professionals used in the project were all introduced to me by Spice Building and I would work with any one of them again.The overall site also contained  a range of redundant agricultural barns and these, too, were restored and converted into a cottage, garaging and a number of outbuildings. Spice Building dealt with every detail, including all the hard landscaping, and even the quarter mile drive.

We had the added challenge of the whole site being on a considerable slope.  It was therefore extremely important to have the camber correct and drains in the right places. Spice Building managed this very efficiently and were prepared to take on all the extra work needed to pull the whole site together including building retaining walls, decorative stone steps and a large amount of terracing.  All the materials for these were sourced with the assistance of Spice Building.

Financially, I received a full breakdown of all costs each month.  Any items that were additional to the original tender process, and there was quite a number, were fully discussed and sanctioned before being carried out.  I was at all times confident in the honesty and integrity of Spice Building.
